Made with simple ingredients, this easy peppermint tea latte is a warm and festive sipper perfect for the holiday season. With a balance of peppermint and vanilla flavors and just-right sweetness, you'll love how much of a breeze it is to make this naturally caffeine-free peppermint latte at home. This post features tips on frothing non-dairy milks with or without a frothing tool.
If you're looking for a festive beverage this holiday season that's non-alcoholic and naturally caffeine-free, you've come to the right place. This peppermint tea latte will get you in the Christmas spirit, warm your bones, go down easy any time of day, and won't keep you up at night.
Plenty of people go in the opposite direction this time of year, but for some of us, sometimes? Those qualities are big!
Whether you're sensitive to or limiting caffeine, avoiding alcohol and many herbal tea blends, or really into peppermint at the moment and want something special to sip on beyond plain tea (or like me earlier this year when I got this idea, dealing with first trimester pregnancy nausea/aversions - all of the above), this peppermint tea latte hits the spot.
P.S. If other herbal teas are on the table for you, you may also like to check out this honey-sweetened chamomile tea latte, too. And decaf espresso gives the green light to a homemade eggnog latte (it's not made with alcoholic eggnog).
Why You'll Love This Latte
- Balanced flavor - It's not overly sweet and the peppermint tea doesn't overpower. It won't leave you with a minty aftertaste.
- Basic ingredients - No specialty coffee syrups, liquid sweeteners, or peppermint oils needed.
- No fancy tools required - You won't need an espresso machine, moka pot, or frothing wand for this warm holiday latte. A kettle or small pot and a whisk, jar, or blender will do the job just fine!
Recipe Ingredients
- Peppermint Tea Bags: Make sure the only ingredient is peppermint tea, not a blend of other mint varieties like spearmint. We just want peppermint alone here for that festive flavor. Teas described just as "mint" usually have other ingredients, as does a popular tea brand with a "candy cane" flavor that includes green tea leaves and other herbs and spices. I always check the nutrition panel ingredient list to verify as it can be hard to know from the packaging.
- Water: Two tea bags are steeped in half the amount of water the box calls for so the flavor is extra-concentrated to hold up as the base of a latte.
- Milk: Use your preferred! Varieties with higher fat content, especially dairy milk, will froth easier. I chose to challenge myself with the peppermint tea lattes pictured here in two ways and used barely-any-fat almond milk and heated/frothed it without the use of a frothing tool. I was pretty pleased! My testing methods and recommendation is below.
- Sugar: Granulated sugar adds a modest amount of sweetness without introducing any competing flavors, like honey or maple syrup would. You can use a simple syrup if you have one/prefer.
- Vanilla Extract: Added to the milk, vanilla extract is another element that elevates this peppermint tea latte above being simply milky, sweetened tea. Consider replacing the sugar and vanilla extract with vanilla coffee syrup if you have one.
Easy Steps
- Step 1: Boil water and steep peppermint tea bags.
- Step 2: Heat and froth milk, sugar, and vanilla extract. There are several ways to do this (listed below).
- Step 3: Divide the peppermint tea between two mugs, then add the milk and foam evenly between them. Add extra sweetener if desired.
Frothing Milk Without A Tool
It's no surprise that the easiest and most effective way to froth milk for a latte is by using a specialized tool, especially one that heats and froths the milk at the same time. But here's how you can prepare milk for a latte without a special tool:
- Heat milk and sugar in a small saucepan set over low heat. Stir as the sugar heats and dissolves, making sure the milk doesn't start to boil.
- Once you notice small bubbles forming around the edge of the pan, take the pan off the heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
- In order from least to most effective: either whisk the milk vigorously by hand; carefully pour the steamed milk into a heat-safe jar, firmly affix the lid, and shake well; or pour into a high-powered blender and blitz until foamy.
Tips and Tricks
- Measure before heating. It's easier to measure out one cup of water and pour it into the kettle before boiling, in case you're not sure if your measuring cups are heat-safe.
- Substitute loose leaf tea. An equivalent amount of loose leaf tea can be used in place of tea bags. The peppermint tea bags I use are roughly 1.6 grams each, so 3.2 grams of tea bags total used for this recipe.
- Handle with care. Smaller glass mugs are cute but heat up with hot liquids. Make sure to use some that are double-walled for insulation or ones with handles.

Peppermint Tea Latte
Ingredients
- 1 cup water
- 2 peppermint tea bags
- 1 cup milk of your choice (see note on frothing)
- 4 teaspoons granulated sugar
- ¾ teaspoon vanilla extract range from ½ to 1 teaspoon (see note)
Instructions
Prepare the Tea
- Bring one cup of water to a boil, setting both peppermint tea bags together in a heat-safe cup. Pour the boiling water over the tea bags and let the tea steep, covered with a lid, for at least 10 minutes. Once time is up, remove the tea bags and press out all water, but leave the cup of peppermint tea covered to retain the heat while you prepare the rest.
Sweeten, Heat, and Froth Milk
- Meanwhile heat and froth the milk and sugar in your preferred manner. If you have a standalone heater/frother, like an Aeroccino: Add milk, sugar and vanilla extract and heat/froth according to instructions. Work in batches if needed as to not overflow the capacity. If you have a frothing wand or no frothing tool: Add milk and sugar to a small saucepan set on the stove over low heat. Heat until small bubbles begin appearing around the outer edges of the pan, taking care it doesn't come to a boil. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Froth with a wand if you have one. If you don't have a tool, whisk the milk vigorously by hand, carefully pour milk into a heat-safe jar and shake, or pour warmed milk into a high-powered blender and blend until it's properly foamed and frothed up.
Prepare the Lattes
- Divide the peppermint tea between two mugs, then pour in equal amounts of the steamed milk and foam between them both.
